More than 1600 drivers stopped for speeding

- Staff reporter

More than 1600 drivers have been stopped for speeding in Stirling in the last year.

The latest statistics have shown that someone is stopped for speeding in Scotland every nine minutes.

There were 1644 people stopped in the Stirling Council area alone last year.

The figures come as part of the new Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland campaign‘In town, slow down’.

The campaign is running across TV, radio, digital, outdoor, PR and social media. A regional roadshow will also take place at key city centre locations and offices.

The TV advert shows drivers in different situations who are stopped by the police for speeding.

Inspector Andrew Thomson, Forth Valley Division Road Policing Inspector, said:“Drivers and riders must comply with speed limits on the roads and drive at an appropriate speed for road, weather and traffic conditions. Speed limits are the maximum permitted speed and may not always be the safest speed.

“All drivers and riders must be aware that speed limits vary according to the road and type of vehicle they are driving.

“There is no doubt that inappropriate speed is one of the most serious road safety problems on Scotland’s roads, and causes death and injury to too many people each year”
