Gary’s riddy for new show
River City star Gary Lamont is coming to the Macrobert Arts Centre with his first ever one-man show, which pays musical tribute to his fellow redheads, from Cilla to Sonia and Lulu to Bette, alongside funny stories and tales of life as a carrot-top.
What a Riddy! takes place on Thursday, March 16 at 7.30pm.
Gary won a MOGO award (Music of Ginger Origin) as Best Newcomer at the Irish Redhead Convention in Cork following the sell-out of his Edinburgh Festival Fringe show in 2016.
He said:“I’m so excited to be bringing my first ever one-man show to a venue as fabulous as the Macrobert.
“I’m very proud to be a redhead and I’m going to be spreading a message of Ginger Power with these wonderful songs and some daft stories along the way”.
Best known for playing sassy hairdresser Robbie Fraser on the BBC Scotland soap for the past eight years, Gary has become a firm favourite with viewers.
Over the years he’s tackled major storylines from gay adoption and domestic abuse to making history with Scottish television’s first gay civil partnership.
But many fans will be surprised to hear his strong singing voice as he belts out tunes from the ginger songbook.
The show’s title, What a Riddy!, was actually inspired by Gary’s River City co-star Dawn Steele, of Monarch of the Glen and Wild at Heart fame. Gary said:“I told a few close friends that I was thinking of doing a one-man show and everyone was really encouraging. Except Dawn who said“Oh my god, you’re going up on stage singing? What a riddy!”. I thought,“That’s is it, that’s the title!”.”
