Brown’, the 30-strong young cast bring this heartwarming new show which centres on a fictional spelling competition in a mid-American school gym, to the stage.

Six “perspicacious,” “jocular,” and “effervescent” teenagers compete to win the bee. In funny, touching and catchy songs, each speller reveals his or her hopes, struggles and passions as they make their way through the cut-throat competition.

Craig Murray, who directs the show, said: “I saw it at the Edinburgh Fringe a couple of years ago and knew it would work brilliantly in the intimate Tolbooth setting.

“It’s a witty and charming show full of laughs with lovable characters. In addition, it also has a really uplifting message about chasing happiness over success and having the freedom to be who we choose to be.

“It’s a five-star gem of a musical comedy that strikes the perfect balance of being smart and silly. In a word, it’s hilarious!”

The “Bee” originally opened in New York in 2005 where it was an instant hit. The New York Times hailed it as “irresistible, riotously funny and remarkably ingenious.” It made its UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in 2011.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is on at the Tolbooth Theatre on Friday, March 24 at 7.30pm and Saturday, March 25 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets, £13.50 and £11 (concessions), are now available from the Tolbooth box office, online, or on 01786 274000.
