Youngsters take the dance route

-

The Macrobert Youth Dance Company is leaping at the opportunity to dance in the national performance event YDance Routes Destinations on Saturday (March 4) at Tramway, Glasgow.

The event, hosted by YDance, Scotland’s national youth dance organisation, is a vibrant showcase of the best youth dance companies from across Scotland and offers a diverse line-up of performances.

MYDC was selected by YDance through an application process after the organisation was inundated with submissions from talented groups from across Scotland. They now have the chance to join 13 other youth dance groups on stage to showcase their own unique dance piece and style to a live audience.

The Macrobert Youth Dance Company auditions for members every August. The first performance that everyone in the selected group worked on together was called Hear Our Voices at the Macrobert. This was an opportunity for young people to perform for other young people at a performance day designed to challenge the need to perform for adults. Destinations will now give the group the opportunity to perform to an audience combined of both.

Destinations will also include the premiere of the National Youth Dance Company of Scotland’s new piece for 2017, Re|place, choreographed by Jerwood Award-winner Yael Flexer. The company has worked tirelessly to create the piece which looks at replacement, or even displacement, and the things you might miss as a result of moving away from home. After Destinations NYDCS will embark on a 2017 tour which includes a performance at the Dance Bridges Festival in Kolkata, India.

Carolyn Lappin, executive director of YDance said: “The 2017 YDance Routes Destinations platform is the sixth annual event showcasing the excellent range of youth dance happening all over Scotland. The 14 groups taking part are just the tip of the iceberg – youth dance is flourishing across the country and YDance is pleased to be able to support and develop Scotland’s youth dance network all year round. National youth dance programmes like YDance Routes give young dancers the chance to meet likeminded young people from different parts of Scotland, share skills and experiences, and showcase their talent on a main stage. Destinations also gives audiences the chance to experience the future of dance performance in Scotland.”

There will be an added competitive element this year as YDance and industry body One Dance UK will work in partnership to offer two groups from Scotland the chance to perform at the National Youth Dance Festival, U.Dance 2017 in Birmingham from July 13 to 16. Selection of the two Scottish groups will be made at Destinations.

Destinations will take place at the Tramway, 25 Albert Drive, Glasgow, G41 2PE on Saturday (March 4) at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale now and can be booked by calling Tramway on 0845 330 3501 or visiting their website at www.tramway.org. Tickets are priced at £6 (£4 concessions).
