Angry locals sign up

Huge backing for Observer’s road closure petition

- Gareth Jones

Nearly a thousand people have backed our call for the proposed closure of a city centre route to be reduced.

Last week, we launched a petition asking for Network Rail and Stirling Council to work together to significantly lower the timescale currently proposed for the removal and replacement of Kerse Bridge, due to the effect it will have on traffic and businesses.

Since then hundreds of residents and business owners have signed the petition.

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) more than 920 signatures had been added in just under a week.

Network Rail have said replacing the bridge is a necessary part of its electrification plans, as the rail tracks cannot be lowered at Stirling due to safety concerns.

A planning application for a new bridge is being considered by Stirling Council, and a 12-month closure of the route could commence in late May.

Last week, the council’s planning panel decided to hold a hearing to further consider the plans, and the move has been welcomed by Braehead Community Council chairman Chris Kane.

He said: “I’m delighted we’ve won the first round in the process to have local voices heard before any final decisions are taken.

“There will be a planning hearing next month and I’ll be there to ensure Braehead and Wallace Park residents have their concerns head by Network Rail.

“We are not against a new bridge, but we are totally against a year-long closure of a road that sees over 22,000 journeys a day.

“That is too much for local residents and business to bear, not to mention a huge concern for road safety in nearby communities, including Braehead.

“Network Rail should take the opportunity to withdraw their application in its current form and come up with something that has a less ridiculous timescale.”

On the petition, local residents have backed the call for the length of works to be reduced.

Vicky Vincent, of Tullibody, said: “I commute to Stirling everyday for work.

“The traffic chaos alone would have significant effect on both my work and home life, not to mention the effect I believe it will have on the local economy.”

Robert Young said: “The increase of traffic on Pike Road and through Braehead that was experienced when Kerse Road was shut for just a few days was unacceptable.

“The road is too narrow and the volume of traffic made it very difficult to cross.”

Steven Dunnachie said: “I wish to sign of behalf of the small businesses this will impact. As if Stirling is not bad enough at the moment without losing more businesses.”

Network Rail have acknowledged the bridge closure will cause disruption and will carry out the works as quickly and safely as possible.

Stirling Council has said it is working with rail bosses to minimise inconvenience to local businesses, residents and those working in the area.
