Shoplifter told security guard: ‘You’ll get stabbed’

-

A thug who told a security guard at a Stirling supermarket he was going to get stabbed has been jailed for six months.

Craig Kelly (27), of Barnton Street, shouted, swore, uttered threats of violence and acted in an aggressive manner at Sainsbury’s on Drip Road.

The disturbance took place on the morning of July 24 – when the supermarket and car park would likely have been busy with shoppers.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard this week how at around 8.45am the security guard followed a suspect leaving the store and asked him to stop.

Despite this, he didn’t and continued walking, before meeting with Kelly. At this point both men turned around and told the security guard to“f*** off”.

The accused then shouted:“F*** off. I’ve got a blade. You will get stabbed.” Both men walked off towards the Raploch area.

Defence solicitor Ken Dalling told the court in mitigation:“He tells me he didn’t actually have a blade.

“There are symptoms which suggest he may have PTSD. He has the support of his girlfriend and she is keen that he follows a different path.”

Kelly was also appearing in the dock in connection with the theft of alcohol from the B&M store on Kerse Road on January 3.

Sentencing him, Sheriff William Gilchrist said:“The report makes sad reading. It’s clear you have a number of underlying difficulties. You need PTSD treatment and you need to address your addiction problems.

“The only option here is for me to impose custody but I will make it for a relatively short period.”

He was jailed for six months and three weeks while sentence was deferred on another matter for three months for further reports.
