School league table praise
Three Stirling schools have made it into a table of the top 50 schools in Scotland.
Balfron High, McLaren High in Callander, and Dunblane High are all included in The Herald league table.
The tables are based on the percentage of pupils achieving five or more Highers in their SQA exam results.
Balfron was the top local performer, coming in 13th in the table with 60 per cent of pupils achieving the results.
Dunblane came in at 15th place with 57 per cent, while McLaren High entered the league at 36th with 50 per cent.
None of the three, however, had five or more pupils living in deprivation.
The Herald said:“As exam results are closely linked to the social mix of the school we also include data for the percentage of children from the 20 per cent most deprived neighbourhoods under the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation. By using these two figures together it is possible to see how well pupils perform in the context of deprivation.”
The top performing school in the country was deemed to be Jordanhill School in Glasgow where 79 per cent of pupils achieved five or more Highers, despite seven per cent coming from deprived neighbourhoods.
Only three schools in the top 10 had five or more children from deprived neighbourhoods.
Stirling Council’s education convenor Councillor Alistair Berrill said:“It’s great news that three Stirling schools feature in the Herald’s top 50 league table. Balfron, Dunblane and McLaren High Schools came 13th, 15th and 36th respectively.
“This is a great achievement and highlights the dedication and commitment from our pupils and teachers.”
