- Kaiya Marjoribanks

Gargunnock Primary will join Allan’s Primary to represent Carse of Stirling Rotary Club in the regional final of the international organisation’s annual quiz.

The West Stirlingshire primary school was pipped by the Stirling primary in the recent heat but will go forward to the final on on Saturday, April 22 at the Logie Lecture Theatre, Stirling University.

From that competition the two winning teams go through to enter the district final held in Aberdeen in June.

Fifteen schools took part - Allan’s, Bannockburn, Borestone, Braehead, Cambusbarron, Cornton, East Plean, Gargunnock, Kippen, Our Lady’s, Raploch, Riverside, St Margaret’s and St Mary’s and St Ninians - competing in teams of four Primary 7 pupils.

The evening was organised and compered by the club’s youth services convener Gordon Brewster throughout 10 rounds, with questions on a wide variety of subjects covering geography, art and music, science, literature, famous people, environment and natural world, sports, maths, history, and spelling and grammar.

The lead changed many times throughout the close fought contest. Questions were generally based on the school curriculum with others thrown into the mix.

At the end of 10 rounds, two teams were tied for first place, Allan’s and Gargunnock.

A decider round of six questions was played, the result being that they were still tied and the quiz went to sudden death.

Allan’s Primary, runners up in the previous two years, finally triumped after answering the question‘What is the circumference of the Earth?’ (40,075 kilometres or almost 25,000 miles).

Club president Douglas Mulholland thanked all who took part and presented the prizes.

Allans Primary received £225 for the school with each pupil receiving a £15 Amazon voucher, Gargunnock Primary in second place received £125 for the school and a £10 Amazon voucher for each pupil taking part.

All participating pupils received a certificate of attendance.
