Trophy slam-dunk for school teams

Pupils cheered on to national success

-

Basketball teams from Wallace High and Stirling High won top honours in the Scottish Championships 2017 Schools Cup competition held at Scotland’s National Performance Centre in Edinburgh this week – supported by two sporting former pupils.

Finn Russell, ex-Wallace High, took a break from training for the Scotland match against Italy to cheer on his school to victory in the Under 15 girls and Under 15 boys events.

The girls romped to the trophy with a 50-27 victory over Dunbar High but the boys’ match against North Berwick High was far more tense, finishing 74-72 in Wallace High’s favour after their opponents missed a shot which would have taken the match into overtime.

Former Stirling High pupil and Glasgow Rocks player Kieron Achara was also in attendance to show his support for his old school as Stirling boys defeated Hillhead High in the Open Cup with a convincing score 103-54.

Stirling Council’s chief education officer Kevin Kelman said: “This is a fantastic achievement by these talented young people.

“Congratulations to the players, teaching and coaching staff and to local club Stirling Knights – together they do a great job in promoting basketball.”
