A grandmother says she has been left “devastated and embarrassed” after staff at a Stirling clothes shop accused her of urinating in a changing room.

Ruth Wakeham (63) says she was humiliated when staff at the Quiz clothing store in the Thistles confronted her over an earlier visit to the shop. Ruth went to the store at around 6pm on Thursday, March 9, to look at a dress for an upcoming wedding when a member of staff approached her and said she couldn’t try the garment on. Ruth said: “I had been in before to have a look as I was wanting something to wear for a wedding.

“I didn’t have time to try anything on at that time so went back on the Thursday after I finished work so that I could try it on.

“I’ve shopped in Quiz a number of times before and never had any problems.

“I took the dress to the changing rooms and two members of staff followed me in.

“One of the girls said `I don’t think we can allow you to try that on. Last time you came in here you urinated.’

“I was totally dumbfounded. I was so upset.

“They told me that they had to get the cubicle fumigated.

“I’m totally devastated and embarrassed.

“I have no idea why they think it was me. If I needed to go to the toilet I’d just use the one in the Thistles Centre.

“I couldn’t understand why they were saying that.”

Ruth, who lives in Glasgow but works in Stirling, says she has been so embarrassed by the accusation that she can’t face going shopping at the Thistles centre.

She added: “They said the last time I was in Quiz, I had a man with me. My boyfriend lives in Glasgow and I’ve never been in there with him.

“There were other shoppers in there at the time. I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t look anyone in the eye.

“I told them, I will never be back in this shop. “I was too upset to even speak to the manager.

“I don’t understand how you can accuse some who is innocently out shopping of doing something so horrendous and disgusting.”

She contacted the clothing chain to make an official complaint and was later offered a £40 gift card and a discount code for online shopping.

A spokeswoman for Quiz Clothing said: “At Quiz, we aim to provide the highest levels of customer care to ensure our customers’ experiences are the best possible.

“In isolated instances where this has not been the case, we ensure we investigate fully and take appropriate action, including training to enhance the customer experience. We are in contact with the customer to resolve the situation.”

A spokesperson for the Thistles added: “We are aware of this alleged incident, this is a matter for the store.”
