Work on gas main replacement starts

Morrison Drive diversion for around two months

- Gareth Jones

Gas works are set to lead to the partial closure of a street.

Utilities firm SGN has started work to replace mains in Whins of Milton, which will take around two months.

The works are set to lead to the partial closure of Morrison Drive, which will begin next week.

A spokeswoman for SGN said: “We began gas mains replacement work in Morrison Drive, Stirling on Monday (March 27). This essential upgrade work involves replacing old, metal gas mains with new plastic pipe and the work forms part of an ongoing gas mains replacement programme developed with the Health and Safety Executive.

“We’ll be carrying out our work in phases. For our first phase of work in Morrison Drive, a southwest lane closure will be in place between the junctions of Davidson Street and Milton Road with a diversion in place along Randolph Crescent, James Street and Davidson Street.

“We understand that people can get frustrated by roadworks. However, the new plastic pipe has a minimum lifespan of 80 years. This means that when the work is complete, Stirling residents will continue to enjoy the benefits of a safe and reliable gas supply for years to come. We always aim to minimise disruption and will be monitoring our progress with Stirling Council.”

There was some confusion on Monday morning, with some bus users contacting the Observer to say that buses did not seem to be stopping in Milton Road.

The Observer understands that there had been confusion about when the roadworks were due to begin, however bus drivers and the council were informed on Monday morning that the road closure would start next week. Bus stops now have full information on when the road closure will be taking place and what diversion route will be used by buses.

A First spokesman said: “First Midland Bluebird had been advised by council officials of the planned roadworks which were due to start on Monday, March 27.

“We worked with the council to establish alternative arrangements and assisted council officials in publicising these for passengers.

“However, it then became clear on Monday morning that the diversion was not in place on that date as we had been advised and we resumed normal service on the route. We have been advised that this will now commence on Monday, April 3.”
