kaiya.marjoribanks@ trinitymirror.com Pupils from Denny Primary School have taken on road safety responsibilities in the town.

Youngsters have been working in partnership with local police officers to educate people about the dangers of the road – particularly around their school.

In addition to taking part in informative assemblies, and creating their own road safety poster, the children have been joining police carrying out speed checks within a busy 20mph zone.

One group of pupils were tasked with monitoring the speed drivers were moving at while another group spoke to drivers deemed to be travelling faster than the limit about the risk their actions pose.

In total 12 drivers were caught travelling faster than 20mph – with the highest speed recorded at 30mph.

PC Lee Strang, a community officer in Denny, was one of those out conducting speed checks with the pupils and he wants drivers to take more care on the roads.

He said:“Road safety is a national and local priority for Police Scotland which is treated seriously – especially the safety of our children travelling to and from school.

“I recognise that each of these drivers could have been prosecuted however, on this occasion, the pupils of Denny Primary educating the offender sent a real and impactful message about how their driving can impact others.

“I would urge drivers to consider their speed and driving manner not just when passing schools but at all times to ensure the safety of some of the most vulnerable road users.”
