Lottery cash boost aids history project
Stirling’s Battle of Bannockburn centre has been given cash for a new community project.
The centre, run by the National Trust for Scotland, has been awarded £9600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
It paid for a community archaeological dig which started at the weekend and explored how people’s relationship with the natural environment had changed over the last 700 years.
The dig is part of celebrations for the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology and was in preparation for the creation of a physic garden in the grounds of the visitor centre.
Historians hope the work will enable the community to learn about the importance of cultivating medicinal herbs in the past.
Stirling school children will explore the use of physic gardens through storytelling, art and literacy, as well as creating their own traditional remedies safely.
Community ranger Laura Livingstone said: “This award will allow us to explore the intertwining of the natural environment and our local history in a new community project. Participants will have the opportunity to learn traditional skills, participate in an archaeological dig, develop presentation skills and help create a lasting legacy to this project in the form of a physic garden.”
