Top cop’s stern warning to bikers breaking the law

- Staff reporter

Motorcyclists have been warned to take care as they prepare to head out this spring.

Forth Valley road policing officers are urging bikers to ride safely, and will be carrying out high-visibility patrols to reassure local communities and drivers to ensure the roads remain safe.

The unmarked Yamaha FJR1200 Police motorcycle will be specifically utilised during these activities, with local communities concerned about speeding.

In addition, officers will be carrying out various enforcement and educational activities as part of ongoing safety campaigns directed at the motorcycling community.

Inspector Roddy MacMillan, Trunk Roads Inspector for Police Scotland’s east area - and a keen motorcyclist - said:“As the nights start to become lighter and the weather improves, we will see increasing volumes of traffic on the roads, as more tourists and motorcyclists venture back out.

“The trunk roads in the Central Belt of Scotland and in particular, the A84/ A85/A82, are very popular from spring to autumn with tourists and motorcyclists. This route is often called‘The Road to the Isles’.

“The vast majority of drivers and riders on the route are safe and sensible, but there is still a very small minority of motorcyclists who demonstrate little regard for their own personal safety and the safety of others. The reduction in road deaths in Forth Valley from 13 in 2015/2016 to four for 2016/17 is particularly encouraging. But there is no room for complacency.”

Inspector MacMillan said that the A81 and A811 will also be monitored, and the Safety Camera Unit will also have a BMW bike on patrol.

He added:“I have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all of Scotland’s communities and visitors. With our unmarked police motorcycle and the Safety Camera Unit motorcycle deployed, in addition to the other resources available, chances of being caught should you opt to disregard the speed limit or other road traffic offences have never been higher.”
