Jazz, classical and Popcorn!

- Erin Dormer (2S1)

There was a lot of anticipation as we got closer to the Stirling High Spring Concert on March 21.

All the groups performing had practised hard to perfect their chosen music. The night of the concert came and the hall was filled with excitement as parents filed in to see us perform.

We began the night with a Scottish Set from Stirling High School Pipe Band. Throughout the evening there were several music styles performed, beginning with the orchestra playing ‘Rondeau’from Abdelazer by Henry Purcell. The orchestra set a high standard for the groups that followed but they more than measured up. We had the Jazz Group performing Tequila, the String Group performing the first movement of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, and the String Quartet comprising Robert Subke, Harvey Pizey, Rosa Hamilton-Smith and Mrs MacDonald who gave a performance of Pachelbel’s Canon.

After the interval there was with a nice guitar and piano duet piece called‘Popcorn Behaviour’from Emily Shields and Neil Sutcliffe. Both Emily and Neil are going on from school to study music at the RCS. We then heard the Scottish group, and to conclude the evening had the Man Choir and the Stirling High School Choir. The man choir sang an ABBA medley starting with Mama Mia then moved through all the songs from the movie and had all of us singing along for the final chorus -‘Thank you for the Music.’The Stirling High School Choir sang‘Al Shlosha’which included a brilliant solo from Aaron Stewart in S2, it was the perfect way to close the Spring Concert and bring an end to this magical concert.

During the evening we had our S6 musicians performing solos at their final Stirling High Concert including Amanda Hiddleston, Vincent Jozajtis, Elliott Lawrence, Ellis Rae, Emily Shields, James Hyland and Neil Sutcliffe. The solo performances provided a great finale for these pupils and inspired the younger pupils.

After the final piece of music, the Headteacher Mr Cassidy gave a vote of thanks to the music teachers, visiting tutors and Jamie Burke S2 who worked on the sound. We all left, buzzing after a great night.

All of the photographs of the evening were taken by S4 pupil Rory Semple.

Also going on at the school this week were preparations for our trip to Lockerbie Manor where 40 pupils will take part in a residential weekend of singing and outdoor activities.

And a huge thank you to all pupils and staff who raised a whopping £1035.05 last Friday for Red Nose Day. S6 pupils organised cake stalls, non uniform day and staff versus pupils volleyball. Well done to all.

Remember, the school closes at 2.50pm on Friday for the Easter break. Pupils should return to school on Tuesday April 18 at 8.45am.

Finally, there area some dates for your diary: Tuesday April 18, pupils and staff return after the Easter holiday; Tuesday April 25, S3 parents’ evening 4.30-7pm (login letters will be sent home by the end of this week); Monday May 1, school closed for May holiday; Tuesday May 2, study leave begins.
