The truck driver who died after a road smash near Balfron last week has been named by police.

Gary Mcearchran (42) passed away after the tipper lorry he was driving came away from the A81 near to Ballat Crossroads on Thursday morning.

Police were called to the accident which happened around 250 metres north of the crossroads at 7.30am. Mr Mcearchran, who is from Campbeltow­n, Argyll and Bute, died at the scene.

A section of the A81 was closed for much of the day before reopening on Thursday evening.

Police sergeant Adam Weir of Forth Valley Road Policing Unit said:“This is a tragic collision and our thoughts are with Gary’s family at this time.

“We are still investigat­ing this collision and are eager to speak to anyone who may have informatio­n. Anyone with informatio­n is asked to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

The accident happened just five days after a woman was hospitalis­ed following a road smash in the same area.

The Observer reported last Wednesday that, at around 10.50am on Saturday March 25, a female, who was driving a Chevrolet Spark, was taken by helicopter to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to “serious”injuries. The male driver of a Nissan Navara pick-up truck was charged with dangerous driving.
