Footballers walk this way

- Donald Morton

Former professional footballer and current SFA player and coach manager for Central Region Jimmy Bone recently made a guest appearance at the Walking Football programme held at Forthbank.

The programme is for adults aged over 50 who still wish to play and is based around the game’s normal rules – the only difference is that you must walk at all times, not run.

Jimmy, 67, said:“It was great to see so many of the players still enjoying kicking a football around, and I was very impressed with their overall enthusiasm that they showed throughout the activity.”

Scott Kinross, Active Stirling and SFA football development officer said: “The programme has been established for over 18 months now and is going from strength to strength.

“There are around 20 participants taking part regularly and I plan to start more venues in the coming months.

“We have also worked in partnership with Stirling Albion who the group will now represent in the forthcoming league campaign at Ravenscraig, Motherwell, which takes place later this month.”

Weekly participant Bob Moyes said:“Walking football provides the perfect opportunity for older adults to participate in a fast growing network with an estimated 80 sessions delivered in Scotland every week.

“At its core is exercise with significant health and wellbeing benefits delivered within a team ethos.”
