Worker’s machine takes tumble

- Chris Marzella

A construction worker had a lucky escape after the mechanical roller he was driving plunged down a sharp embankment on to a busy Stirling road.

Emergency services were called when the loose surface beneath the roller on the narrow footpath apparently gave way and caused the roller to topple on to Back O’Hill Road, leaving a man with a head injury.

Although the vehicle fell only a few feet, it came to rest upside down against the concrete barrier at the foot of the hill.

The incident happened shortly after 2pm Thursday, April 6. Three fire engines attended the scene and gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived.

Traffic was temporarily halted as the machinery partially blocked the road. The man was then taken to Forth Valley Hospital for treatment, although his injuries are not thought to be serious.

Firefighters helped with the removal of the roller before the road was fully re-opened and crews left the scene at around 2.45pm. The council are now looking into the incident. A Stirling Council spokesperson said:“The individual involved was a contractor working on behalf of Stirling Council’s Land Services carrying out footpath improvements between Back O Hill Road and Ballengeich Road.

“The individual was taken to hospital following the incident but was released later that day.

“Whilst we do not know the cause of the incident at this time, we take the health and safety of both our staff and residents very seriously and this is currently being investigated.”
