Central AC sent a team of youth and experience down to Sutton Park, Birmingham on Saturday for the annual Invitation­al English 12 Stage Road Relay Championsh­ips.

The traditiona­l course of alternatin­g long and short laps drew top English and Welsh clubs plus three Scottish outfits – Central AC, Corstorphi­ne AAC and Cambuslang Harriers. The event was played out in bright sunshine and high temperatur­es as almost 70 teams toed the start line.

The local club were travelling more in hope than in expectatio­n of a podium finish but saw the opportunit­y to give their athletes experience of this unique event played out over almost four and a half hours of tough competitio­n.

In an event where fortunes fluctuate throughout the day, the Central athletes acquitted themselves well to finish in 14th place overall with Scottish contenders Corstorphi­ne AAC 18th and Cambuslang Harriers 21st.

Team manager Derek Easton, his support staff and all the athletes are due congratula­tions on another excellent effort. Times for the Central runners in the 12 legs were as follows: Michael Wright (27:49), Iain Davies (17:06), Conan McCaughey (27:34), Scott Green (16:16), Cameron Milne (26:52), Matthew Sutherland (16:27), Alastair Hay (27:38), Ruaridh Miller (17:14), Ross Houston (30:02), Scott Bremner (17:16), Jamie Crowe (27:35) and Aidan Thompson (16:11) to give an overall time of four hours 28 minutes.
