New season underway at the greens
Further green openings took place last weekend as the new season swung into action.
Bridge of Allan, Airthrey Spa (Bridge of Allan), Spittalmyre, Causewayhead, Polmaise and Borestone all kicked off the 2017 term in glorious sunshine.
Our photographer was out and about at the openings and we are featuring some of them today with more to follow next week.
At Dunblane the green was opened by Lady Honorary Vice President June Reid assisted by husband and Gents Honorary President Walter Reid who welcomed everyone and wished them an enjoyable season.
Scores were: J Paterson 2, M Barton 22; K Brown 26, G Mercer 4; A Christmas 9, G Russell 11. The winner of the spider competition was Mike Barton.
Meanwhile at Polmaise, play got underway with the President v Vice President match. Scores (President’s skips first): D McCormick 5, P Smith (stand-in) 14; G Brown 10, P Black 5; J Brown 8, R Smith 10; S Hazel 9, J Wray 9; J Johnstone 11, B Kelly 11. Totals: President 43, Vice President 49.
The president thanks the greenkeeper along with everyone that helped get the green and surrounds in order.
Spittalmyre Bowling Club opened the season with a match between President J Monaghan and Vice President D McEwan. The Vice President’s side won 52-39.
Stirling President Falconer Mitchell welcomed Grangemouth bowlers to the Stirling green last Saturday for the first friendly fixture of the new season.
Scores were (Stirling skips first): P Neilson 20, R Forsyth 13; M Cruz 11, W McKendrick 18; J Miller 14, H Young 18; S Hope 20, D Donaldson 13. Totals: Stirling 65, Grangemouth 62.
A come and try dayw will be held at the Stirling green on Saturday, April 15 starting at 2pm. The event is the perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to try bowls for the first time. Flat soled shoes should be worn and bowls will be provided.
