Friends find great humour in grave matters
The Alman Dramatic Club’s latest production is ‘dead’ funny.
The amateur theatre group will perform The Cemetery Club, Ivan Menchell’s New York comedy, from April 23 to 29 at the Coach House Theatre in Alloa.
The play centres on three Jewish widows who meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves.
Ida (played by Carol Clark) is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille (Rhona McColl) is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris (Jean Kendal) is priggish and judgmental. While visiting the graves they meet Sam (Alan Clark), a butcher, who soon puts their friendship to the test.
Director Jim Allan said: “The Cemetery Club is a sort of ‘Golden Girls’, but with headstones, and will be a hilarious treat for our audience. It is the first time in a long time that this type of play has been performed by the Alman and I’m delighted to be able to stage it at the Coach House Theatre.
“The cast are enjoying getting their teeth into some lovely New York humour and the set is coming on well. We look forward to welcoming our audience for an evening of laughter later this month.”
The Cemetery Club marks the Alman Dramatic Club’s 228th play and replaces the previously advertised Blythe Spirit.
Gerry Docherty, artistic director of the Alman said: “While the club was disappointed to be unable to bring Blythe Spirit to the Coach House at this juncture, audiences will be treated to a joyous play which boasts an amazing set, designed and created by Walter Awlson, Ron Mennie and Jim Allan. I’m looking forward to this immensely.”
The shows will run at the Coach House Theatre in Alloa, from Sunday April 23 to Friday April 28 at 7.30pm. There will also be a matinee performance at 2.30pm on Saturday, April 29.
