Streets to shut for marathon

Residents should get details this week

- Robert Fairnie

Residents will this week be warned of a raft of road closures to be put in place on the day of the Stirling Marathon.

Letters are expected to be sent out with full details of routes affected and areas off-limits.

The event will see around 6500 people set off from Blair Drummond Safari Park at 9am on Sunday, May 21.

Some roads will close to the public from as early as 5am and in some areas are not expected to open up to traffic until the evening.

Busy routes, including the A9 and A84, will be partially closed while parts of the city centre will be off-limits. Roads in Dunblane, Bridge of Allan and Doune will also be affected.

The first 16 miles of the marathon will see runners take in some of the most striking sights across the Stirling area while the final ten mile stretch loops around the city.

Organisers Great Run say that roads will be reopened in a “structured manner” following the last runners finishing and all event infrastructure will be removed and roads cleaned ahead of the reopening.

A park-and-ride operation will be in place for runners, spectators and residents on the day of the marathon, with full details expected to be released later this week.

The 26.2 mile event will see runners take in impressive sights such as Doune Castle and the Wallace Monument before finishing up beneath Stirling Castle.

Among those taking part will be former Olympians Zola Budd and Liz McColgan.

The Great Run Company hope that it will become one of the top marathons in the UK in its first year.

A 5k event, which loops around the city, will also take place on the morning of the marathon while the Great Stirling Family Mile will be held in the university grounds on the eve of the big day.
