City wants to get on board
Stirling a MONOPOLY contender
Stirling is in competition with nine other leading Scottish cities and towns in a Scottish ‘beauty contest’ to land its very own official MONOPOLY game, it has been announced.
There will be an announcement of the winner on Tuesday, May 9 – with two days later a ‘General Election’ on landmarks to fill the winning board.
If the city wins then it means some of the nation’s most well-known and revered landmarks including Stirling Castle and The Wallace Monument will ‘Pass GO’.
And the Stirling Observer could even find its way onto the board taking up the traditional Fleet Street square.
London-based WINNING MOVES UK chiefs, makers of the game under official licence from Hasbro, have studied 10 Scottish cities and towns – including Paisley, which is bidding for 2021 UK City of Culture status, Inverness and St. Andrews.
Early next month they will declare that the MONOPOLY dice will be rolling on one of the 10, which will get its very own board in time for this Christmas.
Emma Lodwick, Custom Games executive at Winning Moves UK, said the 10 in the running are: Stirling, Ayr, Dunfermline, East Kilbride, Elgin, Inverness, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Paisley and St Andrews. She added: “All will be revealed on May 9.” Ms Lodwick complete with her team, large white dice and trademark MONOPOLY top giant, is coming north to Scotland.
But says she hasn’t yet booked her train or flight as she will be making the announcement in the winning location itself.
“It could be any one of 10 places where we will be making the announcement,” she says. “We are sure any of them would make a great customised Monopoly game.”
In 2015 Stirling lost out to its old rival city of Perth in a bid to have its own version of the board game.
Six Scottish cities were involved in a public vote at that time, with Stirling coming in third with 20.5 per cent of the vote behind Perth on 28.6 per cent and St Andrews (27.9 per cent).
