France Trip Two S3 history pupils from recently enjoyed a once-in- alifetime trip to France to observe the centenary of the Battle of Arras at Scotland’s national commemorations. Organised by WW100 Scotland, the two Denny students Cailin Kennedy and Rachel Kennedy were among 72 pupils representing each local authority in Scotland selected for the five-day trip. The Scottish pupils were joined by a matching number of French and Canadian students at a memorial service at the Faubourg d’Amiens Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Arras on Sunday, April 9, where they laid a wreath on behalf of the nations that fought together and placed poppy crosses on graves. The Battle of Arras, which took place between April 9 and May 15, 1917, had the highest concentration of Scottish troops fighting in a single battle during World War One and 18,000 Scots lost their lives. There were a total of 159,000 casualties on the Alled side. Three Scottish divisions took part. Organised by WW100 Scotland in conjunction with the Armed Forces in Scotland, Legion Scotland, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Education Scotland and Mercat Tours International, the commemorations will drive WW100 Scotland’s aim to encourage a spirit of research and inquiry, particularly among young people, to help create a lasting legacy. Pupils soaked up the history of the battle during their time in Arras in order to share their experience and reflections with themembers of the local community on their return home. In addition to the 9.30am service, which was led by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland conducted a Beating Retreat in the Place des Heros at 7.45pm. The students also visited a range of other battlefields, cemeteries and memorials relating to the battles of Loos, the Somme and the Third Battle of Ypres. Football Well done to the senior school football team who, despite losing on penalties did the school proud with a fantastic performance. Well done to all supporters whose behaviour and support was excellent throughout the game. The players and supporters were a credit to the school. P7 Eco Induction For the 10th year, Stirling High held its environmental induction mornings. Co-ordinator Mrs Togneri told pupils the event had started in a small way in the old school but it has since grown legs. This year again there were representatives from all feeder primary schools who came up to do workshops delivered by the Eco Club. This year’s topics were energy, foods of the world, the human body, mini art attack and basketball fitness. The basketball session run by AV/IT Technician Neil Connell, who is also a national basketball coach, and S2 pupil Amanda Gordon. Each pupil tried all the workshops and rounding off the day with a big environment quiz with quiz master Scott Sergeant, vice chair of the eco committee. Stirling High pupils enjoyed and took great pride in running the workshops for the primary schools, getting to know some of the pupils before they return after the summer and the primary pupils now know some friendly faces when they get here.
