Grant’s funny tales from behind the mic

- Gareth Jones

Grant Stott is one of the best known faces in Scottish entertainment.

However the presenter and panto villain never thought he would embark on touring a live show.

Tales From Behind The Mic heads to the Tolbooth in Stirling this weekend, with the show featuring an array of tales from Grant’s varied career.

“I never thought that I would do a stand-up style of show, but it is just me sharing my views and telling funny stories,” he said.

“I have been pushing myself in different directions over the last five years or so.”

Grant, one of Radio Forth’s longest serving DJ’s ever, stepped down from his popular daytime radio show to take Tales From Behind The Mic on the road, after a successful launch at the Fringe last year.

The entire run and extra shows all sold out and drew critical acclaim, resulting in the idea of a Scottish tour.

“It all started at the Edinburgh Festival with a blank canvas really. I have never really looked at myself as a stand-up. It is a show with a narrative, and funny moments.

“We learned very quickly what the strengths were, over the first few nights really.

“But now the show has grown, we have changed it a bit and also extended it, as you have to keep to a tight hour slot at the Fringe.”

Anecdotes from the former Fully Booked presenter include challenging phone-ins live on air, inappropriate song choices from him and other DJ’s, unedited news bulletins, TV shows that he’s successfully killed off, dealing with Ofcom regulations and, of course, what it’s actually like to scare children at Christmas.

After leaving Forth at the start of the year, Grant has just started work at the BBC and will return to pantomime in Edinburgh for his annual festive stint.

“I’m always busy. I just started working with Radio Scotland last week, doing the Janice Forsyth Show. I am also recording a panel show for Radio Scotland. And panto is always going on in the background.”

The tour has allowed Grant to get out on the road, and he is looking forward to visiting the City of the Rock.

“I have been up to Stirling recently,” said Grant. “I came up on a ‘reccie’ a couple of weeks ago to shoot a wee Rough Guide to Stirling video.

“The tour has been running since the end of February and Stirling is pretty much the end of the run. It is the last Saturday night date, and then we finish with a big night at the King’s in Edinburgh.

“I have never really done much in Stirling, so I’m looking
