Ace turn at Muckhart

- Rory Cassidy

Rangers starlet Ally Monro became a record-breaker in the world’s fastest growing sport last weekend - at the age of just 15.

The central defender who plays for Rangers Under 15s, smashed the record at Scotland’s newest FootGolf course at Muckhart Golf Club.

FootGolf is a cross between two of the most popular sports on the planet - football and golf and sees players have to hit a full-size football round a converted golf course, getting the ball in to all 18 of the 21-inch holes, in as few shots as possible.

The record at Muckhart was jointly held by the players ranked second and third in Scotland - Preston Athletic striker Neil Shave from Doune and FootGolf Scotland Sales Director Paul Doherty.

Neil (28) and Paul (40) had both scored 70 for the par 67 course which Paul designed last weekend and on Saturday morning, local man Charles Clarke broke the record with a score of 68.

But just a few hours later after the youngster, who had spent the night before keeping Celtic wonderkid Karamoko Dembele quiet in the side’s 2-2 draw, hit an incredible score of 60, seven shots under par, to become the new record holder.

The delighted Denny High School pupil from Bonnybridge said: “I am over the moon about my performance at Muckhart. The course is amazing and I highly recommend people give it a try.”

The course at Muckhart is the first of three which will be built at the club and Paul said Ally’s record may well stand the test of time.

He said: “Muckhart Golf Club will be a unique FootGolf venue as there will three 18 hole courses on site.

“The first 18 will be the hilliest and proved to be the most difficult to set up due to the rise and fall of the fairways but I believe it provides a tough but fair test.

“The 17th hole provides a stunning backdrop and is also one of the longest par threes in the UK due to the massive drop from tee to green.

“I am extremely impressed that young Ally, the top junior FootGolfer in Scotland, managed to set the course record on his second round.

“Seven under par is a course record that will be tough to beat.

“The second 18 hole course at Muckhart will provide a different challenge and will be the venue for the Forth Valley FootGolf Open, which is part of the country’s official Tartan Super Series tour, in July.”

Ally secured his record just a week after finishing 12th in the first Tartan Super Series event of the season - yhe Strathclyde Open at Hilton Park Golf Club in Milngavie, near Glasgow.
