Net winnings for the junior teams

-

Central Scotland’s junior squash teams produced a best ever performance at the Scottish Junior Inter Regional Championships at Colinton Castle Squash Club, Edinburgh, at the weekend.

The outstanding performance of the weekend was recorded by the under 19 team who pipped West of Scotland to claim the blue ribbon event by a single point despite losing No 1 James Dougan to injury.

But with the under 11s and under 15s achieving third placed podium finishes, the under 13s fourth and the under 17s fifth, the region’s squash kids did Central proud across the board.

The under 19s assault on silverware was spearheaded by Crieff ’s Jack Orr who won all of his matches playing at the top of the order after James Dougan’s injury and in the performance of the tournament Jack claimed the scalp of Scotland under 19 international Ross Henderson in straight sets.

Their bid for glory was also bolstered by the fine efforts of Keir Mackenzie who helped fill the void caused by Dougan’s injury to back up Orr with a crucial victory.

Eilidh Mackenzie stepped up an age group to win in the girls singles slots for the under 19s with a performance of impressive maturity for one so young.

In the under 15s, early set backs against East and West Regions in tense affairs were overcome when the Central team bounced back with victories against Highlands and Islands and Grampian to finish third overall.

Dunblane’s Duncan Hegarty impressed and Alasdair Findlay was also to the fore while Bridge of Allan’s Kyle Penman stepped up from under 11 to notch two fine wins and Lucy Murchie sparkled.

At under 11 Florence Massie also flourished in her first major tournament along with Oliver Hunter, Bertie Wood, Jamie Cargill, Rowan Niven and Anna Halliday as Central’s fledgling starlets battled to a highly creditable third placed finish.
