Demon barber brought to life

Centre prepares for new show

- Kaiya Marjoribanks Sweeney uses his razor to exact revenge on those who wronged him, Mrs Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies

Anyone with an appetite for good theatre - although not perhaps good food - can get their fill of the Dunblane Centre’s latest production.

The Centre is once again preparing for its annual spring production.

While in the past there has been the hilarity of The Full Monty and Avenue Q, this time round there is something different - “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”.

While the dark comedy will have audiences laughing, they could also be squirming in their seats at the same time.

Director Pamela Mackie said: “After Full Monty and Avenue Q our adult cast felt they need a slight change of pace. So, this May we are performing one of the darkest musicals ever written, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

“It’s the unsettling tale of a Victorian-era barber who returns home to London after 15 years of exile to take revenge on the corrupt judge who ruined his life.

“While Sweeney utilises his razor to exact revenge on those who wronged him, his business associate Mrs Lovett bakes the bodies into meat pies and sells them to the unsuspecting public.

“Perhaps composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s most perfect score, Sweeney Todd is lush, operatic, and full of soaring beauty, pitch-black comedy and stunning terror.

“It’s one of the most remarkable achievements in musical theatre of the last 50 years.

“The cast has been working incredibly hard and we can guarantee a fantastic night of theatre evening, one not to be missed.”

Tickets are selling fast so to avoid disappointment book now. There will be a full bar at every show and a combination of single seating and cabaret style tables.

Tickets, price £13, are available now from the Dunblane Centre or online at www.theatreindunblane. co.uk.

The show runs from Wednesday, May 31, until Friday, June 2, at 7.30pm each night and on Saturday, June 3, there is a 2pm matinee as well as a 7.30pm evening performance.
