Stirling Univ professor and community council chairman add names in race to be next MP

-

More potential candidates have been named in the race to become Stirling’s next MP.

Kirstein Rummery, a Professor of Social Policy at Stirling University, has announced that she will be standing for the Women’s Equality Party (WE).

The academic and mother-of-three said that she will raise the issues that the mainstream parties ignore.

She said:“I am standing because as a carer, disabled woman, mother, and academic, I know how important the Women’s Equality Party’s aims are, to Stirling and to the whole country.

“I will be focusing on the need to properly invest in social care and childcare, so that disabled people, carers, and working parents can help us grow our economy, and we can all benefit from living in a caring society that values everyone.”

She added:“Inequality and violence harm everyone and the Women’s Equality Party (WE) works for a fairer society.

“WE will tackle the pay gap, the unequal numbers of women in power, the inequalities in the education system and healthcare, and violence against women and girls.”

Earlier this week, journalist and Braehead Community Council chairman Chris Kane announced he was standing for the Labour Party.

He said:“It’s a huge honour to be selected as Labour candidate at the General Election for the constituency where I was born and where I have lived all my life.

“The next few weeks are important for the future of both Scotland and the UK.

“As the Labour candidate, I will be working hard to take my campaign around the Stirling constituency.”

Steven Paterson, the incumbent SNP MP, has confirmed he is standing for election in Stirling while Bridge of Allan businessman Stephen Kerr will stand for the Conservatives, having finished third in 2015.

The election takes place on June 8.
