Four-figure sum stolen by con man

Took victim to the bank

- Robert Fairnie

Police are hunting a despicable crook who conned a Dunblane man out of a fourfigure sum of cash.

The suspect was driving a white new-style Transit van in Newton Crescent at around 11am on Friday, May 5 when he engaged his victim in conversation.

He offered to carry out building work at the man’s home before asking for cash upfront for materials. He then took him to a nearby bank to withdraw money.

After obtaining the cash the suspect, who didn’t provide a business card or identification, left without carrying out any work.

Officers say that enquiries are ongoing and they are keen to speak to anyone who may have encountered the suspect or his vehicle in the area.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We are fully aware of the impact these totally unacceptable and cowardly crimes have on their victims – the majority of whom are elderly and sometimes vulnerable members of our community.

“It also has an impact on the victim’s families and wider community as a whole.

“We would also appeal to those living in communities to look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours and report any suspicious activity to us. We rely on members of the community to be our additional eyes and ears. The earlier we know that bogus callers are working in an area, the quicker we can respond and investigate.”

Inspector Gerry McMenemy added: “Anyone who thinks they may have had a bogus caller at their door should get in touch with police.

“We would remind people to make sure that, if they are needing work done, they should look around and always get a second opinion. Don’t just go with the one that turns up at your door. All genuine contractors will give you a free assessment anyway.”
