Concerns over speed

Motorists flouting limit

- Robert Fairnie

Those living in the Broomridge area are to be consulted over the safety of a busy road.

Stirling East councillor Alison Laurie is set to hold a consultation event with residents regarding Pike Road, and concerns that too many motorists are exceeding the 30mph speed limit there.

The newly-elected SNP representative says the issue was brought up by a number of people while she was out campaigning in the lead up to the council elections earlier this month.

And she will now contact each resident in the coming days asking for their views on how the road can be made safer for motorists and pedestrians.

She said: “This is a serious concern within the local community and it is important that Stirling Council commits to making our roads safer.

“Local residents are best placed to make suggestions about how we can work to improve the safety of the Pike Road – which all too often sees cars speeding past a built-up residential area. The SNP Group has pledged to work to improve road safety by introducing safer speed limits but it is clear that something further must be done to slow the flow of traffic that comes off the A91. I look forward to hearing the views of local residents on this issue and urge residents to get in touch.”

Councillor Laurie added: “A lot of people come straight off the A91 and perhaps don’t adjust their speed quickly enough.

“There are a number of things which can be done – signs could be put up or speed bumps or rumblestrips could be introduced. We could also look at the speed limit itself. I think it’s important that we hear what the residents have to say.”

There is also expected to be a significant increase in traffic on Pike Road when the busy Kerse Road Bridge is closed for 12-months due to removal and replacement works. Works could get underway in August.

A council spokesperson said they were aware of the concerns. She added: “Traffic calming measures in the form of central traffic islands have already been installed on Pike Road, and, in addition, two electronic speed-activated signs are due to be installed. Speed enforcement itself is a matter for the police.”
