A minute’s silence for Manchester victims
Stirling stops to pay moving tribute to families
Stirling Council held a minute’s silence for the victims of the Manchester attack yesterday (Thursday) morning.
A total of 22 people, including an eight year-old girl, have died and dozens more are seriously injured after 22-year-old Salman Abedi detonated a home-made device at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in the Manchester Arena on Monday night.
More than 60 ambulances and 400 police officers attended as panic set in among the 19,000-strong crowd who attended the event.
It was announced on Tuesday that the UK terror threat level is now up to the highest level of “critical”.
And the local authority are urging people to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at this time.
A spokesperson said: “While there is no indication of a specific threat to Stirling or to Scotland, we would ask everyone to be especially vigilant at this time, be aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious to the police. Our thoughts remain with the families of those affected by this terrible attack.”
Police officers were seen standing outside Stirling police station for much of Wednesday to reassure members of the public.
And Police Scotland Chief Constable Phil Gormley said that they will be reviewing all safety and security measures.
In a statement he said: “My thoughts and those of everyone at Police Scotland are with those who have lost loved ones or who were injured in the attack in Manchester.
“As part of the UK-wide response to these events, Police Scotland continues to review all safety and security plans and operations.
“This includes ensuring that our armed policing and specialist resources are appropriately deployed.
“People will therefore see armed police on patrol at transport hubs and crowded places.
“There is no intelligence to suggest there is any threat to Scotland but I would ask the public to remain alert and report anything suspicious.
“We continue to liaise with the UK authorities in response to this incident.”
