Runners prove a Bloodwise booster

120 competitors support charity

- Robert Fairnie

Generous runners taking part in the first ever Stirling Scottish Marathon raised almost £40,000 for a leading blood cancer charity.

Bloodwise, who were an official charity partner of the marathon, fund world leading research and offer expert information and support to anyone affected by more than 130 different types of blood cancer – to leukaemia and lymphoma to some of the rarest cancers.

And they had around 120 runners taking part in Sunday’s showpiece 26mile event, with a further nine running in the 5K, in aid of the good cause. Their efforts have resulted in £36,500 being raised so far.

The aim of the charity is to help raise awareness of the different types of blood cancer while funding new ground-breaking research to help people survive and improve patients’ lives.

They currently have pioneering research taking place in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen but need further support if they are to continue the good work.

Stacy Rowan, regional manager at Bloodwise, is delighted with the efforts of their runners.

She said: “We were honoured to be the official charity partner for the inaugural Stirling Scottish Marathon, and are truly inspired by our amazing supporters and their stories.

“The event and atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. To have over 120 runners take on the Stirling Marathon and 5K to raise vital funds to help us in our mission to fund groundbreaking research, to stop people from dying and make patients’ lives better is absolutely amazing.”

Blood cancer is the third biggest cancer killer and the fifth most common cancer. Around 38,000 people every year are diagnosed each year.
