Stirling Area Commander, Chief Inspector Lynn Ratcliff, above, urges people to be vigilant against hate crime.

Readers will undoubtedly be appalled and concerned by the terrorist attack which took place in London on Saturday, particularly since it comes so soon after the attack in Manchester.

It is imperative, however, that the communities of Stirlingshire and those across the country remain united against hate and extremism.

We must not tolerate or condone any attempts to target any persons or groups within our community and anyone who becomes a victim of or witness to any hate crime must get in touch with Police Scotland to report the matter.

Just over two weeks ago, people from all over the UK and indeed the world congregated in Stirling to take part in or be a spectator at the inaugural Stirling Marathon, an event which brought together all sections of our diverse communities to encourage and celebrate the achievements of those taking part in the race and raise money for many charities and worthy causes.

The sense of unity and community spirit evident that day exemplifies the strength of the communities across Stirlingshire and I know that individually and collectively, we will not allow that to be undermined or threatened by acts of hatred.

Be assured that Police Scotland continues to work with partners both at home and abroad to counter the threat from terrorism and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our communities.

You can play your part by remaining vigilant and if you have any concerns or information about suspicious activity or behaviour, get in touch with Police Scotland on 101, the UK Anti-Terrorism Hotline on 0800 789 321, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or in an emergency dial 999.

As you will be aware, voting for the General Election takes place tomorrow (Thursday)and Police Scotland is reviewing the safety and security plans in place at polling stations and all other events in the coming weeks and months.

It is important to be aware, however, that there is no specific threat to Scotland and I’d urge you to go about your business as normal.

We have many exciting events taking place over the summer months including the Crit Under the Castle cycle race, Armed Forces Day and both the Stirling and Bridge of Allan Highland Games to name but a few.

Please go along and enjoy these days with family and friends, remaining alert but not alarmed.
