City set for cycle extravaganza

- Robert Fairnie

Hundreds of cyclists will make their way to Stirling later this month for what is regarded as one of the top circuit racing events in Scotland.

The fourth annual Crit Under the Castle will be held on Sunday, June 18 with eight events taking place during a packed day of racing – with riders ranging from juniors to elite cyclists.

The mile-long closed road circuit starts at the Albert Halls with riders making their way through the Kings Park area before returning to cheering crowds in the city centre for a grandstand finish.

For most races the finish will be back at the Albert Halls but the elite men and women will finish on the castle esplanade after a steep climb.

Roads being used for the event will be off-limits to motorists for much of the day.

The day will kick off with the category four men’s race at 12.30pm before the juniors set off 50 minutes later.

Next up is the under-14s and under-16s races – with the events forming a stage of the prestigious British Youth Series.

The event, which is sponsored by Morrisons Jaguar, will then finish off with the elite male and female races – which were last year won by Harry Johnston of team Pro Vision and Neah Evans from Glasgow Whlrs.

Among those competing this year will be Stirling’s Rhona Callander and elite racer Jenny Hall.

Last year hundreds of riders and thousands of spectators made their way to the city centre for the event.

And organiser Norrie Petrie of Stirling Bike Club hopes for similar success this time around.

He said: “We’re expecting around 350 people competing over eight races, which we are really pleased about – particularly in the youth events.

“We have people coming up from England and Wales for the race. There will be some of the top young racers from across the whole of the UK.

“We’re looking forward to a top event and we hope to see as many people as possible out enjoying the spectacle.”

Parts of Albert Place, Victoria Place, Victoria Square, Clarendon Place, Kings Park Road and Port Street will be closed to road users between 11am and 10pm, with residents allowed access between races and diversions in place.

There will also be some closures on King Street, Corn Exchange Road, Spittal Street and Mar Place.

Spectators will also be able to make the most of a special event village on Dumbarton Road with around 20 stalls along with attractions and live commentary.
