Stirling County ladies celebrate a successful season
Winners of the BT Women’s Club of the Year, Stirling County have built a strong foundation for the future through their girls’ section with the U15 and U18 teams recording successful seasons.
This season, there has seen movement in terms of the numbers of players involved in women’s rugby at Bridgehaugh - the 1st XV competed in the BT Women’s Premier League and were runners-up in the BT Women’s Plate Final; the U15s were runners-up in the President’s Conference and in the Club Cup Final and the U18s won the President’s Conference and Club Cup Final.
To finish off a great weekend for the girls, both the U15s and U18s girls teams won their respective National 7s Cups at Murrayfield
Next season the club has plans to establish a U12s team and proposals are under way to go on the first ever SCRFC Girls Tour in August to the Women’s World Cup final in Belfast.
Under 18s head coach Al Wilson said: “It has been a phenomenal season for Stirling County girls.
“Although we have had some great wins since the season kicked off in September, it is fair to say that this is Stirling County’s season finsihed in spectacular style last weekend with two prestigious awards at the annual Scottish Rugby Union Awards Dinner.
And more silverware followed on the pitch thanks to the under 15 and under 18 girls.
The Bridgehaugh club landed the BT Women’s Club of the Season with Matt McGrandles collecting the Youth Coach of the Year for his work in coaching two under 18 teams to the top end of their respective Conferences and steering the under 18 A squad to National Youth League Cup victory.
the product of three or four years of developing the girls section at Stirling County and this award is recognition of all players, coaches and managers, past and present, who have helped on this journey.
“Having players who are keen to play and hungry to improve backed up by an academy structure that is focused on the whole player, has taken time to establish, but the dedication of all involved has paid dividends and we’re all so proud of the girls for what they do, week in, week out.”
He added: “The women;s squad have been great to work with this season and the girls have turned out to see them play some great games this season.
“We all look forward to working together to provide the support for these young players to move up to senior rugby, alongside these great role models in the coming seasons and continue to grow the women’s and girls’ game at Stirling County and across the country.”
