Police investigate after fire at railway station
Police are investigating possible reckless conduct after a fire broke out which saw Stirling railway station evacuated.
All services via Stirling were brought to a standstill.
Police believe that a lit cigarette in the station’s boiler room could have sparked the blaze that saw all lines blocked.
Emergency services were called after ablaze broke out at the station shortly before 7pm on Monday, June 12.
Firefighters arrived at the scene but the fire had already been extinguished.
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said:“At 6.54pm on Monday, June 12 the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a small fire at Stirling Railway Station.
“Two appliances attended however the fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of crews.
“Firefighters ensured the area was made safe before leaving the scene.”
However, police were called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
Whilst it’s not believed that the fire was started intentionally, police have began investigations.
A spokesperson for the British Transport Police (BTP) said:“We were called at 6.58pm to the boiler room at Stirling railway station, to reports of a fire.
“After analysing CCTV, the fire was not believed to be caused deliberately but is being investigated as possible reckless conduct, caused by a lit cigarette.
”Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by calling 0800 40 50 40 or texting 61016, quoting 483 of June 12.”
Scotrail informed commuters of the issue via social media. It tweeted“Due to a fire near the railway at Stirling, all lines are currently blocked”. All lines re-opened at around 7.20pm. A ScotRail Alliance spokesperson said: “There were some minor delays as a result and we arranged for First Bus Ticket Acceptance to be in place between Stirling and Edinburgh to supplement train services.”
