Wheel-ly thrilling cycle event

-

More than 20 young cyclists made their way to Plean Country Park for a race against the clock.

Members of the Wallace Warriors, which is Stirling Bike Club’s junior section, saddled up and took part in a Funduro race.

This is an enduro-type event where riders compete to secure the best time over a number of different off-road stages. They aren’t timed between the stages and can take time to recover – making it different to normal racing where fitness can be as important as skill.

Prior to the main event those taking part spent the morning receiving coaching and tips on how to tackle the course and, crucially, this type of race.

Youngsters Jack Robinson and Emma Baillie both impressed with their quick speed and earned a special mention from organisers.

And at six-years-old Millar Crumpton was the youngest cyclist taking part in the event.

Craig Manson from Stirling Bike Club said: “It was another great day for the Warriors and the first time our club has organised an event of this kind.

“Credit to Richard Barton [event organiser] who made this happen, and thanks to the parents who stayed to marshall the course. We had a great day for it – the sun was out and the midges weren’t.

“The technical skills on display today are testament to the excellent quality of coaching that the youngsters receive in the club. I was riding around during the morning session and struggled to keep up.

“They are confident riders who really enjoy the challenge of racing over this tricky course. Everyone was buzzing with excitement afterwards.”
