Andy in with a chance in Stirling’s big game

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

He is the world number one tennis player and by December Andy Murray could feature on the Christmas number one board game too.

The two-time Wimbledon champ will get a mention on the new Monopoly game for Stirling.

While Andy may have been beaten in the semifinals of the French Open tennis last Friday, he is still at the summit of the sport and destined to forever be a local hero for Stirling and his home town of Dunblane, both of which will feature landmarks in the new Monopoly: Stirling Edition.

As a youngster Andy trained at the University of Stirling and he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the university in 2014. He is also one of only three people to be awarded the freedom of the city of Stirling.

But all this is about to change as many thousands will get the chance to win that honour – albeit only as part of playing Stirling Monopoly this Christmas.

Last month Stirling was revealed as having seen off nine other Scottish cities and towns to get its own version of the board game.

The new game is out this October, with Stirling stores queuing up to stock it.

Emma Lodwick from Winning Moves UK, who are producing the edition, said: “We are absolutely delighted to feature the world’s number one tennis star in the game and, from the public and retail reaction, we believe this will be the Christmas nmber one seller this year.

“The game will see around 30 leading Stirling landmarks replacing the famous Monopoly addresses like Park Lane and Regent Street.

“We invited the public to help us put this special edition together by sending in votes and suggestions. We would like to thank everyone who has taken this new game to their hearts.”

Winning Moves UK will not say which Andy Murray landmarks will appear on the game but Dunblane Cathedral, where he was married, did very well in voting held last month, as did the Andy Murray postbox.

“Come Christmas Eve at this rate the only games left will be the ones on Santa’s sleigh,” says Emma.

“The new Monopoly game will define and represent Stirling, with the landmarks voted by the public. The suggestions have been wonderful.”
