Star treatment for sporty kids
Experts drop by East Plean Primary
Stars and experts from the world of sport inspired pupils during East Plean Primary School’s Sports Week recently.
The week, which ran from June 5-9, is always much anticipated by the youngsters, who give 100 per cent effort to all the activities offered.
This year many local clubs gave of their time to come along and deliver sessions to children from P1-7, including Stirling Golf Club, Rainbow Warrriors Tae Kwon Do, Stirling Netball Club, Jonesy’s Boxing Club and Bannockburn Rugby Club.
Acting depute headteacher Erin Diamond said: “As well as fantastic support from our Active Schools co-ordinator John McCallum and Elliot McMahon, an American Football coach, we also had an orienteering course set up in the school grounds for children to access which proved a very popular activity.
“We had a visit from Commonwealth Gold Medalist Jennifer Renicks via the Sports Champions for Schools programme. She came to share her experiences of competing professionally and representing Scotland and the UK in judo. She inspired the children by sharing the determination and commitment it has taken to become a professional athlete as well as delivering important messages about living a healthy and balanced lifestyle. She then led children in a sponsored circuits challenge.
“We also received a visit from Elaine Hopley, who is the solo female record holder for rowing across the Atlantic. She was also inspirational for the children, sharing her experience of training for and racing across the Atlantic.”
Throughout the week, children undertook tasks which allowed them to earn points for their house, which will count towards one house winning this year’s sports shield, proudly displayed in our school trophy cabinet.
Erin added: “We are incredibly grateful for the athletes and coaches who came along to support our Sports Week. We are very proud of the determination and perseverance shown by our pupils throughout all activities. We certainly didn’t allow the torrential rain to dampen our spirits.”
