Celebrating the work of carers
The role played by carers has been marked in a national awareness event.
National Carers Week recognises the vital contribution made by the UK’s 6.5 million unpaid carers, an estimated 15,000 of whom live in the Stirling Council area.
Thanks to funding from Big Lottery Fund Scotland, Stirling Carers Centre narked the occasion by hosting information events in Killearn and Strathblane, coffee events in Stirling and Callander, complementary therapy sessions, a bus trip to Lomond Shores and a trip to Foxlake adventure park for young adult carers.
The Young Carers Service also ran trips for seven-17 year olds to 10-pin bowling, gymnastics at The Peak and a meal at The Boozy Cow.
Stirling Carers Centre spokesperson Laura McPherson said: “We were delighted to be once again partnering with Active Stirling, Bellrock and McLaren Leisure to offer carers free access to local leisure centres in Stirling, Callander and Balfron during Carers Week.
“This was particularly important given this year’s Carers Week focus on promoting the importance of health and well-being in carers, and we are very grateful for their support.” Stirling Carers Centre also held its 25th annual general meeting at the Golden Lion Hotel, Stirling.
“It was a great opportunity to celebrate local carers and highlight the exciting times ahead as the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 is implemented,” added Laura.
“We heard from Peter Stapleton, carers policy manager at the Scottish Government, and May Kirkwood, our centre manager, on the impact of the Act and the challenges ahead.
“It was also invaluable to hear the carers’ perspective from Shubhanna Hussain-Ahmed, our elected carer representative on the health and social care integration joint board.
“Shubhanna highlighted the importance of professionals listening to and engaging with carers, and the value to both sides of working together.”
