City crews strike gold

Stirling Rowing Club had a successful outing at the Scottish Championsh­ips on Strathclyd­e Loch.

The club entered 25 crews, with athletes ranging from ages 13 to 70, and brought home eight gold medals with one silver and three bronze.

Eleanor Culley was a double winner with gold in the girls junior 14 single scull and the junior 14 double scull with Isla Henderson, while Isla landed another gold in the junior 13 double scull in a composite with Glasgow Schools.

Also landing a golden double were the masters G team of David Plank, David Shanancan, Andrew Hilley and Ian Robb, who came home first in the coxless quadruple scull. The fantastic four were then coxed by Natalie Firth to victory in the coxed fours.

Veteran Billy Brown also landed two golds in the masters G single scull (age 65-plus) and in the masters coxed eights, where he and Stirling member Gordon Henderson were in a composite boat with members from Castle Semple RC.

In the masters A-C single scull (age 27-40) Ross Marchbank took gold and he went home with a silver as amember of the open men’s quadruple scull team with Gregor Hall, Graeme Duff and John Dunse.

Bronze medals went to Rory Duncan and Ben Kirby (boys junior14 double scull); John Denovan (masters A-C single scull) and Gregor Hall (open men’s lightweigh­t single scull).

Rory Duncan fell into the water 30 metres from the line in the boys junior 14 single scull but managed to climb back into his boat to finish.
