Gargunnock scare leaders

- Tom Yuill

Gargunnock showed they will be challenging for honours this season after an enthralling match at leaders Balfron Rovers on Saturday.

They led through veteran Gareth Killen but after he missed a penalty Gordon Reid made amends with the equaliser. The second half saw action at both ends but no goals until Kevin Meggat scored Balfron’s second. Killen equalised but Meggat scored again and with two minutes left Scott Ross made the win safe.

Killearn travelled to Kippen and returned with a 7-1 win under their belts. Goals came from Ian Crawford (2), David Cameron (2), Fraser Cameron (2) and Nick Wilkie.

Thornhill were beset with team difficulties but their policy is not to call off but to call out the veterans. Against the freescoring Deanston they struggled and in the end the Ston had scored 11 without reply.

Buchlyvie were at Gartocharn and led 2-0 at the break. Gartocharn shaped up a bit in the second half and Chris Poole scored for them but Buchlyvie kept their noses in front.

On Tuesday Balfron were at home to Aberfoyle. It was end to end until Mark Hailstones put the home side ahead after 35 minutes. Sean Wilbert tied the scores just before the interval.

Rob Roy roared into the second half and scored twice through James Ghattas and Craig McCallum. Ross MacKenzie and Kevin Meggat earned Rovers the draw.

Drymen kept the pressure on Balfron with a 7-0 win against Thornhill. Their seven goals were shared by Jack Bain (2), Craig Cowan, Michael Warnes, Sam Degg and Sean Smith (2).

Gargunnock went to Gartocharn and kept themselves in the running with another narrow win. Chris Poole put Gartocharn ahead but before the break the visitors were level. Poole again put his side in front but again Gargunnock drew level before going on to get a late winner

Blanefield and Killearn had their usual well-fought contest . Killearn went in front and Blanefield equalised before Ian Crawford restored the visitors’ lead. The second half saw plenty of action but no goals.

Deanston faced Buchlyvie, needing a seven-goal margin to put them into the Margaret White Trophy semi-finals. They duly scored eight but Buchlyvie scored twice to let Blanefield in through the back door.
