Popular Andy moves on to pastures new

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

More than 60 friends and neighbours gathered at Strathallan Court in Cornton on Saturday night to say a fond farewell to good Samaritan Andy Wilson.

The 77-year-old is moving to pastures new outwith Stirling – but not before those who know him could say thank you for all the help he has given them over the years.

Ian Whyte, of Vale Grove, said: “He has lived at Strathallan Court for 16 years and is a larger-than-life character – even though he is not very tall!

“I first got to know him on the Cornton Road when I moved to the area 10 years ago. I would regularly meet him with bag loads of shopping which he did on behalf of neighbours at the retirement complex.

“Neighbour after neighbour spoke on Saturday night of how he had helped them over the years and how he was often the first person they turned to in time of need.”

Andy – often described as the ‘unofficial janitor’ – was overwhelmed by the good wishes.

“I like to entertain everyone with my singing,” said Andy.

“I just like to help people. I’ve looked after people until they passed away. I’d make Christmas dinners every year for those who were on their own and I always felt appreciated by everyone. I liked if they asked me to do things to help out.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came along and those who sent their best wishes. The manager Sandra Nichol has been very good to me. Being here has been a lovely experience and I will miss it – but I hope to come back at some point for holidays.”
