Generous mums are kitting out needy children for school

-

Needy parents kitting out their children to return to school are getting a helping hand from a group of Stirlingshire women.

The ladies came together a few years ago to create a school uniform bank for the area after seeing a similar project take off in Glasgow.

The volunteers will be in Tesco in Stirling on Saturday July 15 to collect in donations and also hope to encourage shoppers to pick up some items in-store to drop in their collection boxes

One of the organisers, Sandra Laird, said: “We wanted to allow disadvantaged children to have the same pride, self-respect and dignity as their peers.

“Running along similar lines as foodbanks, we are asking people to donate what they can.”

Donations are needed for all school-age children, from nursery and P1 to S6 stage.

The Stirling group, whose members come from Callander, Dunblane, Kippen and Stirling, gets referrals and distributes the items with the help of charities and other organisations and in the past has delivered everything from socks and underwear to skirts, trousers, polo shirts, gym shoes and stationery.

A few members of the group even got together to make gym bags and pencil cases.

Sandra said: “Tesco in Stirling have again very kindly allowed an appeal to take place in their store on Saturday July 15.

“We are hoping shoppers will add an extra item or two to their trolley if they can.”

The uniform bank is looking for polo shirts (white or blue), trousers (black or grey), skirts (black or grey), jumpers, cardigans, sweatshirts, tights (white, black, grey), socks, underwear, plain white T-shirts, jogging bottoms, swimwear, shoes, gym shoes, hair bands and clips, toothbrushes and paste, hair brushes and also stationery.

We are asking people to donate what they can . . .
