Lollipop lady says her final farewells

Sandra steps down as traffic lights take over

- Robert Fairnie

A Menstrie lollipop lady is calling it a day after more than three decades spent serving her community.

Sandra Macnair (61) provided Menstrie Primary pupils with safe passage across Main Street for the final time on Friday afternoon as she bid the role an emotional farewell.

The introduction of new traffic lights on the road has left her services no longer required.

And Sandra says she is going to miss life as a lollipop lady – having been doing the job for 34-years.

She told the Observer: “I think it’s going to be weird not doing it. They’ve put new traffic lights in so they don’t need me any more.

“I’ve been working along this same road for 34-years now and I did enjoy it. I’ve put kids across the road and then they’ve grown up and I’ve put their kids across. It’s quite funny how it works.”

As a grandmother of 12, and great-grandmother she certainly isn’t going to be stuck for things to pass the time.

Sandra, who is originally from Bridge of Allan but has lived in Menstrie for most of her life, added: “I won’t be retiring as I’m only 61. I’ve got a cleaning job in the morning and then I work at Kerry [Ingredients] too, so that will keep me busy.

“I’ll also get the chance to spend some more time with my family.”

On Friday, her last day in the job, Sandra was presented with a basket of flowers from the school. And she also had many presents from the children.

Headteacher Lisanne Henderson said: “I would like to thank Mrs McNair for her years of service to Menstrie Primary School and the community of Menstrie, keeping children safe for all that time. We wish her all the very best for the future.”
