Drummer Stephen up sticks to follow dream

- By Gareth Jones

A Stirling University graduate and musician is set to move to London to pursue a lifelong ambition of becoming a full-time drummer.

Stephen Coetzee, (25), graduated from the University of Stirling in 2014 with a degree in marketing – but while working solidly for four years, he kept his hand in with many a musical project, eventually leading him to join renowned Stirling blues rock outfit, GT’s Boos Band, in 2013.

Over the four-year span as a student, Stephen realised that his passion for drumming was more than a hobby. His interest in theatre shows saw him contact many musicians playing musical theatre productions touring the UK and in London’s West End, in order to observe the work involved with such gigs – which helped further his ambition and drive. His passion, work ethic and quality of playing improved so much so that he began seeking a living from being in bands and playing a variety of local theatre shows.

Stephen said: “My time at Stirling University was one of the best – I made many friends and musical connections while studying my degree here. It was where I realised I wanted to be a full-time musician, so it will always be the place of transition for me.

“When GT’s Boos Band happened, I was thrilled. I auditioned at Roadshow Music, Upper Craigs in Stirling and the band snatched me up right away. The project took me on tours around the UK and Europe with their début album Steak House. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. This has all helped formulate my plan for London – it’s all part of the journey for me.”
