Trio of victories for Stirling sides

There was a clean sweep for Stirling County at the weekend with all three of its sides registerin­g victories.

On Saturday, the County side defeated Drumpellie­r at New Williamfie­ld by 64 runs and the 2nd XI beat Greenock 2nds by 85 runs at Glenpark.

Then to cap it all off, Chris Geddes scored a century as the Sunday XI won in the final over against Alloa XI by three wickets.

County stay in second behind West of Scotland in Western Union First Division after their comfortabl­e win on Saturday.

Stirling batted first and partnershi­ps were the key as they made 228 for four in 50 overs with Matthew Tweedie top score on 59 while Kevin Loggenberg 941 not out), Gavin Anderson (38) and Graeme Taylor (35) all contribute­d.

Drumpellie­r, who defeated Edinburgh giants Grange on Sunday to reach the Scottish Cup semi-final, started briskly but Gordon Shaw’s dismissal for 20 slowed them down.

Tom Jones took three wickets in one over to decimate the Coatbridge side’s middle order with only overseas amateur Hayden Sweet offering any resistance.

When he was out for 74, the game was up and Rukman Hewage wrapped up the tail to end with figures of four for 27 as the visitors were all out for 164.

Batting first, Stirling were on 123 for one after 24 overs when the rains came to Greenock and they were unable to finish their overs. Ian Wilkinson hit 49, Chris Geddes 41 not out and Vamsi Machana 24 not out.

The Duckworth/Lewis system calculated a score of 186 in 24 overs for the home side but that was never going to be challenged as Machana ripped through the top half of the batting to take six for 40 as the Glenpark side were all out for 101.

On Saturday, Stirling 2nds travel to GHK 2nds. ●Stirling’s Sunday XI were involved in an exciting finish at New Williamfie­ld in their latest Strathmore and Perthshire Union Developmen­t League fixture against Alloa XI.

The visitors batted first, scoring 186 for four in 40 overs and Stirling seemed to be cruising to victory as Chris Geddes scored 106 but his dismissal in the closing stages looked to give the visitors the upper hand.

The heroes of the day, however, were John Templeton and Andy Weir who both hit boundaries as Stirling won by three wickets in the final over.

On Sunday the match is at St Modans.
