Old Crocks do their bit to help pal struck with illness

-

Veteran footballers from West Stirlingshire have raised around £4000 for a Fallin man in a special charity game.

Forth and Endrick Old Crocks have been playing in charity matches for the last couple of years, bringing in more than £21,000 for Macmillan, Beatson and Lucky2B Here.

And in their latest game they took on Abbo’s Old Crocks to net funds for 29 year-old Liam Smith, who was left with severe brain damage after being starved of oxygen during an asthma attack as a youngster.

Friend of the family Gus McGregor - chairman and manager of the Old Crocks side - organised the match to help get the money together for Liam, his mum Roseanne and his other carer Heather Brown to pay for a holiday.

Balfron man Gus and his teammates held a successful raffle and auction and each player had sponsor sheets while three main sponsors UK Contractor Letting, Tesco in Bridge of Allan and Mrs Tilly - all made great contributions said Gus.

The 62 year-old added:“We have around £4000 with more to come in and we’re hopeful that there will be cash left over to be used to further aid Liam’s care when he returns.”

Last Saturday’s match saw some silky skills on show by both sides and it was apt that Gus slotted home the winning goal.

“It wasn’t Premier League standard - it was more entertaining,” said Gus, who presented Douglas Smith, Liam’s uncle, with a silver plate afterwards to commemorate the day.

The Old Crocks will now head to Stonehaven for their next charity match to raise funds for lifeboats.

Gus said:“We supply all our own costs like travel and accommodation. We still have fun and do some good.”
