Dominant Gunny take over at the top

- Tom Yuill

Gargunnock took advantage of Balfron being on cup duty to move to the top of the league on Tuesday.

Drymen also had the chance to leapfrog the Rovers and scoring five goals agaisnt in-form Deanston at Thornhill would normally have earned them all three points.

Not against goal-hungry Deanston. And the under-strength Drymen defence could not cope with the pace or finishing of the Deanston attack, who rattled in eight goals for a resounding win.

That result opened the door for Gargunnock and they grabbed the opportunity with a 2-0 win at Buchlyvie. They had the better of the game from the start but could not turn their advantage into goals and the first half ended goalless.

After only two second-half minutes Jonny Morris opened the scoring and that was quickly followed by a goal from Darren Petrie to put the Gunny 2-0 ahead. They then missed several chances before Petrie completed the scoring from the penalty spot.

That win takes them to the top of the table and also guarantees them a place in the knockout stages of the Telfer Cup.

Killearn have been steadily climbing the table and they collected another three points against Thornhill to add reality to their challenge.

Although they were on top from the start, the score sheet was still blank at the end of the first half, thanks to a fine display from Thornhill’s young goalkeeper coupled with some careless finishing.

The second half continued in the same vein until Ally More opened the scoring for Killearn. That was followed by a second from Stuart Cameron and Killearn collected three valuable points.
